Qualifying session :

To start with a large advantage, Stirling Moss had to be qualified on the first raw. At the starting signal, he immediately had to take the lead on the other cars.
He was the favourite of this race, much more than Mike Hawthorn, because this last had won only one Grand Prix since the beginning of the Championship, the ACF (Automobile Club from France ) Grand Prix in Reims .

What follows did not support Stirling Moss, he was second on the starting grid behind Mike Hawthorn in 2 ' 23 '' 2 against 2 ' 23 '' 1.

The « Two hours of Casablanca  » before the 1958 Grand Prix :

“Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome on Radio Morocco . Us here in Casablanca , my fellow-members and myself for the first official Grand Prix on the Aïn-Diab race track. A very spectacular circuit not only for its speed but also for the power of the cars which will run there.

This race is really a special event in all the country because it is the first time that a country of Africa - except South Africa - organizes an official Formula 1 Grand Prix. But before a so much awaited Grand Prix, like the “tradition” wants it, national races will proceed.
We will start with the “2 hours of Casablanca ”.

Usually, in the Western countries, a Formula 2 race also takes place before the Grand Prix, but Morocco decided to make it at the same time as the Formula 1 race! The race will be more exciting!”

“The hot favourite of these 2 hours of Casablanca is Mr. Barbey, an insurer, which especially acquire a new Lotus 11 and was helped by a whole mechanics team for the event.”

”This race will give us a first impression from what will await us thereafter.”

“And here! Antoine Ciancanelli and his Alfa-Romeo Veloce had won!”

“And now, the show will take place!”

Just before the race

The beginning of the Grand Prix is now very close. 60000 fans are there. And more than 200 journalists are also present. We have a high level first row composed of Mike Hawthorn, Stirling Moss and the young Stuart Lewis-Evans who will be surely a great driver in the future.

"As you know, an incredible fight should be held between Moss and Hawthorn who dispute the drivers’ championship in this year. “
