Works of art

The Morocco Grand Prix was not only a motor race, but also a gathering of artists, in particular painters.
The paintings made during a Grand Prix were very “en vogue”. It was a very salesman process remembering a race (because at the time there were no weekly or daily magazines to see photographs of a race).

Below, paintings made at the Morocco Grand Prix. Today, they represent a great value.

The three pieces above were made by the same painter, in the Sidi Abderhaman corner, taken below in photograph.

Consequences of the accidents

The serious accident which took place in Casablanca between Olivier Gendebien, Tommy Bridger and François Picard wounded this last seriously. But fortunately, it been able to continue his career.
He had on the other hand more chance than Stuart Lewis-Evans who, in his insane increase, left the road and made several barrel rolls before his car burn.
Before being repatriated in England , Bernard Cahier saw Stuart Lewis-Evans in the pits infirmary, and he testifies:

“I went to see Lewis-Evans whom one had installed under a tent, and he said to me : "Oh! Bernard, I don’t want to die". He did not realize but he was completely burnt!
He was conscious, under sedative obviously. My brother-in-law, who had the best private clinic of Casablanca , came immediately. When he saw the state of Stuart, he said to me: “Immediately made come Tony Vandervell” (the owner of the Vanwall team). Vandervell was half faint when he saw Stuart. My brother-in-law advised him to repatriate Stuart in London on his aircraft. In England , because of war, there was a lot of burns victim in aviation and he thought that they could perhaps do something over there. But he entrusted to me in his opinion, he would have died in one week. They tried to graft Stuart, he seemed to be better, but exactly a week later, he had died." (Interview from the review "Automobile Historique")

This tragedy marked a crushing argument for Tony Vandervell, in love with the automobile sport and keen patriot. He was broken-hearted. In spite of a constructor championship brilliantly gained in 1958, Vanwall never again returned on this level of competition.
